I'm Dave Lane, a born-and-raised St. John's resident who has a passion for this City. I'm excited to work for the residents of St. John's to make this a City we can all live, love, and thrive.
I have worked in web development, marketing, and communications since 1998, and received a joint degree in Computer Science and Business Commerce from Memorial University in 2005. My education, combined with a lifetime involvement in the arts, has enabled me to bring together diverse groups of people to make things happen in business, community, and municipal government settings. In 2013 I was elected to St. John’s City Council as a Councillor at Large.
Prior to being elected to Council, I chaired Happy City St. John's, a group of dedicated volunteers focused on public engagement at the municipal level. I continue this engagement work as chair of the City's "Engage!" task force, a City-led group of citizen representatives that developed the new St. John's public engagement framework.
In my work as a councillor I am: co-chair of the Economic Development, Tourism and Public Engagement Standing Committee; co-chair of the Heritage Advisory Committee; chair of the Environmental Advisory Committee; and council representative for Roadmap 2021 (the City's economic strategy committee), Downtown St. John's, Clean St. John's, the St. John’s Food Policy Council, and the Railway Coastal Museum.
I'm a musician and was a drummer for rock bands Hey Rosetta! and Pilot to Bombardier. I have spent many years singing with successful choral groups such as Quintessential Vocal Ensemble (QVE), Newman Sound Men's Choir, and Innismara Vocal Ensemble.
Below is a description of me written during the 2013 election campaign to give a better sense of who I am:
I am committed to building a St. John’s that is developed thoughtfully. As founding chair of Happy City St. John’s, I have been bringing public input to City Hall. I sit on boards and committees with Downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland Historic Trust, St. John’s Clean & Beautiful, and St. John’s Board of Trade.
I am involved in the local arts community, and have been a member of Newman Sound Men’s Choir, Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, and Innismara Vocal Ensemble. I have also played drums for several years, including a stint as the drummer for well-known St. John's band Hey Rosetta!
I’ve had the opportunity to participate in standing committees at City Hall, including the Police and Traffic Committee, Heritage Advisory Committee, and the St. John's Municipal Plan Review Advisory Group.
Along with frequent attendance of council meetings, this has kept me up-to-date on what’s happening in St. John’s and how decisions are made at the municipal level. Happy City has connected me with local citizens and global organizations that explore how to make a city better.
I love St. John’s and have dedicated a great deal of my time and energy to helping make this the city of our dreams. I know what we can accomplish when we work together, and I know how to get it done. Our city has incredible potential and we have a real opportunity - right now - to make lasting, positive decisions for our future success.
